This method of testing will provide information as to what the client’s current needs are relative to the musculoskeletal system by identifying potentially weak or inhibited muscles.
This course will introduce students to the use of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) to address weakness elicited by our manual muscle assessment. This course is not a “corrective exercise” or rehabilitation course; it is specifically a course to teach you how to perform isometric manual muscle tests to gain objective data as to the different joint actions you would want to have the client perform utilizing specific joint actions to stimulate muscles that test weak.
Part 1: Upper extremity and cervical spine October 19 (9:00 -4:30)
Part 2: Lower extremity and trunk October 26 (9:00 -4:30)
Objectives
· Understand the origins of MMT and its application to improving muscle function
· To explain how the nervous system encourages compensations to maintain function, but can ultimately lead to dysfunction
Participants will be able to:
· Describe the process in which a manual muscle test is set up and performed
· Correctly execute an isometric manual muscle test
· Demonstrate precision with the manual muscle test grading system (levels 3-5)
· Interpret and explain the finding of a manual muscle test
· Identify a minimum of one muscular compensation for each manual muscle test performed
