A case study will be used to help personal trainers apply exercise science principles to program design. The course is designed to be interactive and practical, presenting essential exercise science principles and guidelines for creating an effective exercise prescription. AAPTE 1.25 CEC

 Diabetic Client Case Study

Mrs Jones is a 52 year old woman with a known history of diabetes. Medicated and under good glucose control. Her physician recommended a structured exercise program to possible decrease her need for medication. She recently began to walk for 30 minutes a day, 4 times per week. A previous smoker, one pack a day for 25 years. Her father died from a heart attach at age 60. Mrs Jones does not have any symptoms of cardiovascular disease. Her recent physical findings were, height 68inches, weight 80kg, Total cholesterol 190 mg. dl-1, LDL 129 mg. dl-1, HDL 39 mg. dl-1, RHR 84 BPM, and BP 119/78 mmHG.
 
Case study application will examine:

  • Screening and risk stratification
  • Goal setting 
  • Need and ability assessment
  • Prescribing exercise intensity
  • Exercise considerations
  • Exercise prescription, programming
  • Rate of progression
  • Need for modification
