The exercise considerations and program design for special populations short course(s) discusses the significance of exercise in both the prevention and treatment of chronic illness, advises exercise professionals in considering proper exercise prescription protocols, and provides evidence-informed guidance on devising individualized exercise programs.
In particular, these continuing education courses discusses exercise considerations for individuals with cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, neurodegeneration, pulmonary disease; it provides an understanding of the limitations for various populations and how to modify exercise to meet their needs. The courses are also practical application based with case studies, breakout rooms, evaluation and discussion of developed exercise programs
Special Populations Course Learning Objectives include:
- Background on potential causes and pathology of chronic illness
- Discussion regarding Physical Activity and Exercise Recommendations for Persons with Chronic Conditions
- Identification of safe, effective, and efficient exercise for clients with chronic illness
- Analysis and implementation of exercise programs for many chronic diseases; including, heart disease (hypertension, dysrhythmias, congestive heart failure), metabolic (diabetes, obesity), pulmonary disease (chronic and restrictive pulmonary disease), and neurodegenerative disease (Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s).
- Exercise protocols within the personal trainers’ scope of practice
- Examine and integrate a physician’s recommendations into your personal training exercise program for clients.
- Adaptations to training for clients with chronic illness
- Prevention of chronic illness through exercise and environmental factors
